For a woman, getting pregnant and eventually giving birth is the most satisfying thing. It makes them feel complete. This is not only important to the woman, but the man is also happy because this means that his legacy lives on.

Pregnancy may also have some glitches that may make it hard for both the mother and the fetus. Some of these glitches include abortion, stillbirths, and the Prematurity of the baby. In worst cases, there is even death to the mother due to complications of pregnancy.

The ministry of health has put up efforts to reduce mother-to-child mortality during pregnancy. Antenatal care is part of these efforts. It is recommended that a woman should visit at least 4 antenatal clinics before the 9 months of pregnancy.

1. You will be able to get important Health Education.

Antenatal visits provide great Education for the mother. They are taught how to take care of themselves during the period, and how to identify danger signs in pregnancy.

2. Help identify risks in pregnancy.

According to your previous obstetric history, the healthcare provider will be able to identify if you are at risk, which will help them keep a close eye on you. Some of the high-risk conditions include those women who had obstructed labour in their previous pregnancies.

In the antenatal clinics, you will get the best advice on which foods to eat to benefit you, and your growing baby. You will also receive folic acid and iron supplements. Note that deficiencies in iron and folic acid will predispose your fetus to conditions like spina bifida.

4. Appropriate Immunizations

In antenatal care, the expectant mother will receive immunization against conditions that could prove fatal to both her and her unborn child. These vaccinations include a flu shot, malaria prophylaxis, and tetanus injection.

5. It will help keep track of how your child is developing.

The doctor will do an ultrasound to see how your child is developing, and if they are in any distress. This will help identify any problems arising and deal with them earlier.

6. Screening for diseases.

In this period, diseases like syphilis have to be screened. This disease can be passed from the mother to the unborn child and can be fatal. Other diseases screened include HIV/AIDS.

7. It helps develop a care plan

The healthcare provider will help the mother develop a care plan. This care plan will help identify where she wants to give birth, how she will get to the facility when there is a problem, who will help her get to the facility, and what she will need for her baby, for example, diapers.
