In today’s article, i will be showing you how you can create a Facebook group and some of the advantages it holds having one. Before we start, let me tell you the difference between a Facebook group and a Facebook page.

Quick Summary

To create a Facebook group from your laptop or pc, login to your Facebook account, click on Groups, on your left side of dashboard then choose create New Group.

To create a group on Facebook using your Smartphone Facebook app, click on the 3 dots on top right, then click on plus(+) icon to create new Facebook group.

Differences between a Facebook group and a Facebook Page – Which one fits you?

Before you we create a Facebook group, let us see some of the differences between a Facebook group and a Facebook page. To make this simple, I have created an infographic below with a summary of some of the differences between the two.

1. Facebook groups give me room for discussion because the participants can post ideas and files and get replies from fellow Facebook group members. This boosts engagement in the group. On a Facebook page, only the page admin shares ideas, and the followers can only comment.
2. A Facebook page usually suits companies or organizations and people with fans who would love to follow them, while groups are for a community of people who would love to share ideas and other things.

How To Create a Group On Facebook

Facebook groups can be a good way to share your ideas with people who share the same interests as you. For example, if you are a fan of animals, setting up a Facebook group for animal lovers can be a good way of bringing the community of animal lovers together. In that Facebook group, you will be able to hold conversations, share animal memes and videos and even do business by sharing products related to that particular topic.

If incase you feel like you want to remove the group, you could always delete it or pause it for a while

How To Create a Facebook Group Using a Laptop or Pc

If you are using a laptop or a PC, here is how you can make a group on Facebook easily;

1. Visit Facebook’s official page by clicking here, through Google.
2. Enter your name and password to log in to your Facebook account. If you don’t have one, you will have to make a Facebook account first before proceeding.
3. On the left side of your Facebook account dashboard, click on Groups.
4. The next window will display the various groups you have created and those you have joined. Click on Create New Group.
5. In the next window, enter your group details, including your group name, and the privacy(Whether you want it to be a public or private group).
6. Done, your group is already created, you can now start adding people to the group by sharing group invites.

How To Create a Facebook Group Using a Smartphone Device

Making a Facebook group using a smartphone is almost the same, the difference being the change in interface between the two devices;

1. Open and log into your Facebook application.
2. Click on the 3 dots(Or dashes) on the top right of your Facebook app.
3. Click on the Groups option.
4. Click on the plus(+) icon at the top of the app.
5. Enter the details for your new Facebook page.

Great, you now have a new Facebook group, but you can now do more things to make it great like adding a Group cover photo, adding Facebook group admins to your page, and setting up rules for the page.

How To Add Your Group Cover Photo

After creating a group, you have to upload a cover photo to your Facebook group to at least make it attractive and attract people to join. To make one, you could hire a professional designer like me on Upwork for a small fee, or create one yourself using tools like Canva or Photoshop. For beginners, I would recommend hiring a graphic designer or designing a Facebook group cover photo using Canva.

After creating your cover photo, click edit to upload it to your Facebook group.

Adding Users To Facebook Group

To add users to your Facebook account, you can either send invites for other people on Facebook to join, share links to other people through messages and finally through Facebook advertisements.

Inviting People To Join Your Facebook Group

If you would love to invite some people, like friends and relatives that share the same interest with you, these people need to first of all be on Facebook. If they are not on Facebook, you can always show  them how to join Facebook by helping them sign up for Facebook.

To invite people to join Facebook;

1. Open you Facebook group page
2. Click the (+) Invite sign on the right side of your group name.
3. To invite them via Facebook, click the “Invite Facebook Friends” option. Choose the ones you want to invite and click Send Invites. Don’t invite a lot of people at once or else Facebook will see it as spam.
4. If you want to invite others to your Facebook page via email, choose invite by email, then enter the email of the person you want to invite, then click invite to complete it.
5. Those who you have invited to join the group will receive invitation via email, or through Facebook notifications(Depending on which option you used to invite them).
6. The will receive instructions on how to join your group on Facebook

Using Facebook Ads To Group Members

You can also take advantage of Facebook ads to grow your Facebook Group faster. This the best method because Facebook ads can be setup to target audience in Facebook who are really interested in your group. I am not saying that inviting people by sending emails and invitations is not effective, but what are the chances that those you invite are not interested at all?

Setting up Facebook ads is not free, it will cost you money, and so it is important to set up your ads well so that you spend as low as possible and get the most out of it.
