macOS 15: Release Date, New Features, Supported Devices, and More

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is set to take place on June 10, 2024. Among the anticipated announcements is macOS 15, the latest iteration of Apple’s renowned operating system for Mac. Here, we delve into every detail and rumor about macOS 15, from its release date and possible names to the new features and supported devices.

MacOS 15 Expected Release Date

Apple’s consistency in releasing macOS updates in the fall is well-documented. Since OS X Mavericks in 2013, each new version has launched between September and November. This trend suggests that macOS 15 will follow suit, with an official release expected to be announced at WWDC 2024.

Potential Names

While Apple has a history of naming its macOS versions after iconic California landmarks, the official name for macOS 15 remains a mystery. Internally, it is referred to as “Glow,” but this codename is unlikely to reflect the final name.

Potential names based on Apple’s trademarked but unused names include Diablo, Condor, Tiburon, Farallon, Miramar, Rincon, Pacific, Redwood, Shasta, Grizzly, Skyline, Redtail, Sequoia, and Mammoth. Speculation is rife, with Skyline being a particularly intriguing possibility given its futuristic connotations.

Supported Devices

Every new macOS update typically drops support for some older models. For macOS 15, we anticipate the following devices to be compatible:

  • MacBook Air (2019 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2019 or newer)
  • iMac (2019 or newer)
  • iMac Pro (all models)
  • Mac Mini (2020 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (2019 or newer)
  • Mac Studio (all models)

A notable aspect of macOS 15 is its integration of new AI features, potentially requiring high processing power, which might limit these features to M-series Macs.

New Features

Apple Intelligence

A major highlight of macOS 15 will be the introduction of “Apple Intelligence,” a suite of AI-driven features. These will include:

  • Content Summarization: Automatically generating summaries of long articles or documents.
  • Email and Text Response Generation: Drafting replies based on context and user preferences.
  • Emoji Generation: Creating custom emojis.
  • Photo Editing: Enhanced AI-driven editing tools.

These features will be available as a beta initially and are likely to be restricted to M-series Macs due to their processing requirements.

Siri Enhancements

Siri will see significant improvements, including:

  • Complex Task Execution: Handling more sophisticated commands.
  • Voice Shortcuts: Allowing users to create personalized voice commands for specific tasks.
  • Third-Party Integration: Improved functionality with non-Apple apps.

Updated Settings App

The Settings app is set for a UI overhaul to streamline navigation. Changes are expected to be user-friendly, ensuring familiar functionality with a more intuitive layout.

Accessibility Features

Enhanced accessibility options will include:

  • Custom Phrase Mapping: Associating specific phrases with accessibility triggers like VoiceOver or Zoom.
  • Expanded Font Sizing Options: Customizable font sizes for more apps, including Books, Weather, News, Stocks, and Tips.

Live Speech and Freeform Updates

Live Speech will introduce a “categories” section for organizing phrases, and Freeform will receive “Freeform Scenes” for better collaborative workspaces with new UI enhancements and keyboard shortcuts.

Features We Hope to See

Enhanced Widget Functionality

Building on the introduction of widgets in macOS Sonoma, users are clamoring for the ability to stack widgets, reducing desktop clutter and improving accessibility.

Unified App Ecosystem

A more consistent experience across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS would be beneficial. Apps like Health, Fitness, and Translate should be available on macOS to enhance cross-device functionality.

Seamless Integration of Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence should ideally synchronize preferences and tasks across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, ensuring a cohesive user experience across all devices.

We expect to learn more about macOS 15 during Apple’s keynote and the Platforms State of the Union at WWDC 2024. Stay tuned for our comprehensive coverage of all the announcements.
